We're not born knowing how to treat our hair. Add the fact that many black women grow up with relaxed/straightened hair that they treat one way. Then, if they ever choose to go back to being natural, they have to learn a completely different way to deal with this new texture. Plus, some women are only comfortable wearing weaves or wigs, or try a new look every Monday. No wonder hair care companies are raking in the dollars!
Even if you're very knowledgeable today about good hair practices and don't commit any "hair crimes," chances are you may have made a mistake or two along the way. I know I've made more than a few!
What's the worst thing you've ever done to your hair? (I'm not talking stylist horror stories -- that's another post for another day!) I mean what have you done to your poor hair? Hopefully, you can look back on it and laugh, if it happened long enough ago.
I'll confess first. Though I've made more than one mistake, my worst hair crime was about 20 years ago. My hair was relaxed and colored. One day, I decided I didn't want the color anymore and since I had no patience whatsoever, I bought a color stripper instead of letting it grow out. Big Mistake. After stripping my chemically processed hair with that harsh treatment, my hair looked like the toughest yet spongiest scrubber pad money could buy. Plus, it wasn't even long enough to pull back and hide! I spent about a week living with that catastrophe (which was six days too long) before cutting all the damage off and starting over.
Now that I've bared my soul, I want to hear from you! Share your hair horror stories with the rest of us in the hopes that no one repeats the same mistake.
